Letter Sound Identification Activities

Cookie Sheet & Magnets

Supplies
- Cookie Sheets
- Letter Magnets

Activity
- Tell the student to take of certain letters by stating the name or sound of the letter. Zoophonics and Pathways Curriculum both provide great actions and visuals to learn each alphabet letter.
- After the students take each letter off, I then have them put each letter back while doing the same activity.

Letter/Sound Bean Bag Animal Toss

Supplies
- Bean bags or balls to toss to students
- Letters of the alphabet on paper- Laminate (Two sets if you are not using bean bags with letters on them)
- Masking Tape

Activity
- Show a letter to the student. Ask them to tell you the letter sound &/or name. Once they say it correct tell them to act like a certain animal that starts with that letter on their way to find the letter on the floor. For example, if they are going to the letter M, they might need to act like a monkey or a moose. You may need to show them what that looks like. Once they reach the letter, have them face you and catch the bean bag or ball. They stay on that letter until their next turn. Once it is their turn again, have them toss the ball or bean bag back to you. Then, show them a new letter and ask them to do the same thing. I only have the students do about five letters in this activity. They absolutely love it!

Gross Motor Connection:
- Catching and Throwing
- Crawling, hopping, etc. like different animals

Math Connection:
- You could do this same activity but with numbers. You could also show the students two numbers and they need to go to the number that is more/greater or less/fewer.  Then, they might need to hop, jump, or march that many number of steps.

Initial Sound Box Sort

Supplies
- Items that start with the initial sounds you are working on
- Sensory bin (beans) filled with items that students are suppose to sort
- Shoe Boxes
-Scissors & Staples
- Letters of the alphabet to put decorate the shoe box with. I used sand letters that I had in my classroom

Activity
- Everyday, as a checkout activity, each student has to grab one item from the sensory bin to sort and put into the corresponding letter box. It is a quick way to check to see if my students are understanding initial sound segmenting. I put up a new letter box as we learn about that letter. Eventually, the wall will have the entire alphabet on it.
