Beginning Letter Sound Activities
Beginning Letter Sound Activities
Supplies
- Container to put random objects in (I use old formula containers). Collect objects that start with the beginning letter sounds you are working on.
- Bin or mat to sort objects according to beginning sound
- Paper/Marker & tape to label mat or bin with beginning sounds you are working on
Directions
- Tell the students that they need to go fishing for different treasure.
- They dig in the bucket and pick out an object. They place the object in the bin according to the matching beginning sound.
Struggling Learners
- If a student is struggling with where to put the object I will give them a choice between two sounds rather than all of the sounds.
- I may have the students watch my lips while I say each sound and the word. I will ask them to tell me the following: Are my lips closed? Is my tongue on the roof of my mouth? Am I pushing out air? This helps provide a visual for each sound. This concept comes from Pathways; which is a phonemic awareness/phonics curriculum we use in the district that I teach at.
Math Connection
- After sorting the objects have the students line the objects up to count and graph. Discuss which letter/sound had the greatest/most objects and which letter/sound had the least/fewest objects. Use uni-fix cubes to help with graphing if needed. See link below for free copy of graph at TeachersPayTeachers.
