Sight Word Activities- Kindergarten

Stacking Cups

Supplies
- Cups
- Permanent Marker

Activity:
1) Put the cups in a line on the floor
2) Have one student grab a cup and read the word. If they can read the word they get to put it on the tower. The to goal is to make the tower as high as you can without the cups falling down. It is a team effort. If the student cannot read the word they put it back in the line and try again next turn. I also have the students use the sight word in a sentence. This helps with comprehension of the word and language building.

Struggling Learners:
If a student cannot read the word I may not have them add it to the tower anyway. If they cannot create a sentence on their own with the word I may have them repeat a sentence I created for them. We also may start with a few cups and a few sight words at a time.

Math Connection:
Have the students count how many cups are in the tower all together. You can also discuss which row of cups has the greatest/most and which row has the least/fewest cups.

Sight Words Word Wall

Supplies
- Dianne Craft- Right Brain Sight Word Cards (pre-primer & primer)
-Press the link above to buy sight word cards
- Electric Tape
- Letters of the alphabet to organize word wall

Activity:
1) Use Dianne Craft sight word cards to teach the students their sight words. Put it up on the word wall after introducing the new word. Review the words daily with the students.
2) When I teach students these sight words, we spell the word to a rhythm and then say the word and the sentence on the back of the card while doing an action to represent the word. Sometimes I will use sign language to represent the word while we say it. The actions and sign language help kin-esthetic learners retain the words better.
