Phonemic Awareness Activities

Stretching CVC Words

Activity:
- Give the student a CVC word (ex. cat, bug, mop, tip, wet) to stretch out or say slowly. For the gross motor stretching activity have the student start by standing on the green dot. As they walk towards the yellow dot they say the first sound in the CVC word. As soon as they are standing on the yellow dot they start saying the middle sound in the CVC word. Once they are standing on red dot they say the last sound in the word. I then use this same concept at their desk to sound out words using their fingers. The colors help the student to visualize the different sounds in CVC words. We use these color cards when working on segmenting, blending, and discussing first, middle, and ending sounds in words. This basic concept is derived from the phonemic awareness curriculum called Pathways to Reading.
